SN74LVC244A: Output, 5V tolerant?

Part Number: SN74LVC244A

Hi,

Good day. I hope everything is fine.

Our customer is looking for an alternate part for 74LCX244 and I've suggested to use the SN74LVC244A. However, they have told us that the 74LCX244 is 5V input and output tolerant while the SN74LVC244A is 5V input tolerant only.

With this, I would like to know if this is indeed the case for SN74LVC244A. Is this device cannot tolerate 5V on its output?  If yes, could you please suggest another device that they could use.

I would appreciate your help with this matter. Thank you.

Regards,
Cedrick

  • Hi Cedrick,

The input can always be connected to 5V, regardless of the supply value.

The output can be connected to 5V when it is in the high-impedance state regardless of the supply value.

We recommend against this when the device is actively driving the output.

Do you know what the application is that will be applying 5V to the output? If I can see some details regarding how the device is being used, I can give more information on what will happen.

  • It should be noted that the 74LCX244's outputs are 5V tolerant only when they are in the high-impedance state, which is exactly the same as the SN74LVC244A.
