MSP-EXP432E401Y: Powering the board with an external 5 volt supply

Part Number: MSP-EXP432E401Y

I'm trying to measure how much current the MSP-EXP432E401Y takes when it is powered from an external 5 volt supply.  I tried connecting a 5 volt supply to jumper J13 and moved the jumper at JP1 to 5V-EXT but when I turned the power supply on it didn't take any current.  I obviously need to do something else to power the board with 5 volts but I can't find anything in the data sheets that tells how to do this.

Can someone tell me what I need to do to get this working?

Thank you.

  • See the Section 2.1.6.4 Other Headers and Jumpers in SimpleLinkTm Ethernet MSP432E401Y MCU LaunchPadTm Development Kit User's Guide (Rev. B) for a description of how JP1 is provided to select the 5-V power input source for the Ethernet LaunchPad development kit.

  • I read through Section 2.1.6.4 and It's still not clear to me where I should apply 5-V to power the board from an external source to figure out the power requirements.  That section says that 5V-EXT on J1 should be selected when the board is powered from a BoosterPack plug-in module but never says how to configure the board from an external 5-V supply that is not a BoosterPack plug-in module.  When I try to power it at J13 it doesn't draw any current so that is obviously not right.

The last sentence also concerns me. It says "If JP1 is in the left or middle position, which selects the BoosterPack headers or the USB OTG connector, respectively, externally provide 3.3 V to the board, and remove the 3V3 jumper on J101", and if I'm reading it correctly, I also need to supply 3.3v separately and all of a sudden this whole project is getting more complicated.

Can anyone just tell me how much power is required for the MSP-EXP432E401Y?

    Thank you.
