Our customer wants to know if they should move ahead with doing their layout for the ZRB package (157 ball BGA) with a 4 layer, top side only design.  This means placing all the decoupling caps on the top side.

I looked at SMPA059, and I see that we recommend 2 decoupling caps on the bottom side in the middle (figure 14).  I expect there will also be challenges with getting other decoupling caps close enough around the outer edges of the device, if all on the top side.

Have you seen a successful layout with 4 layer, top side placement?

What do you recommend?
