TMS570LS0714: Maximum number of write/erase data flash cycles

Part Number: TMS570LS0714

Dear TI support,

I would like to know more regarding the data flash memory write/erase cycles. I'm aware that the flash can withstand 100000 cycles  as specified in the datasheet (see picture below). However I would to know if you have more data regarding this topic, mainly:

  • What exactly happens when we pass the maximum number of cycles? Is the processor going to detect a problem and never start again ?
  • Can the processor eventually detect this type of problems?
  • Is there a register that counts the number of writes/Erases during it's lifetime?
  • Do you have any statistical data ? For example 10 out 100 processors will fail after this number of cycles
  • How is the this number affected by the years ? Is the maximum number of write/erase cycles the same weather I use the processor for 5 years of for 15 years?

Thanks,

  • Hi Filipe,

We started working on your issue and we will provide an update soon.

  • Hi Filipe,

What exactly happens when we pass the maximum number of cycles? Is the processor going to detect a problem and never start again ?

When the maximum number of cycles is exceeded, the flash memory may become unreliable, with a higher likelihood of errors occurring. However, this does not mean that the processor will start again. Instead, the processor may experience sporadic failures.

Can the processor eventually detect this type of problems?

Processor will not detect this type of problems, the only way application can know is ECC errors. ECC errors(SECDED) will be generated frequently after exceeding maximum number of cycles.

Is there a register that counts the number of writes/Erases during it's lifetime?

I don't see any register for this purpose. I want to cross check same with the internal team again before confirming.

Do you have any statistical data ? For example 10 out 100 processors will fail after this number of cycles
How is the this number affected by the years ? Is the maximum number of write/erase cycles the same weather I use the processor for 5 years of for 15 years?

We don't have any statistical data. Because it is again depending on the variety of factors, including temperature, voltage and frequency of use. So the statistical data on failure rate can vary depending on the specific application and usage conditions.
