TI-RTOS-MCU: support for MSP430

Hi team,

I’m a bit confused with TI-RTOS support for MSP430 (more specifically, MSP430FR5994).

I believe RTOS, Free-RTOS and TI-RTOS are not supported for MSP430 family. MSP430 is non-OS. But TI-RTOS-MCU tool page states below.

And “supported product & hardware” shows development kit for few MSP430s only.

Does TI-RTOS support MSP430, including MSP430FR5994?

Or does it support only three development kits, but not as IC (so the customer cannot develop their own system on TI-RTOS)? Does it support MSP430FR5969 as IC for example?

Hi Kurumi,

TI-RTOS examples are available for the MSP430FR5994 launchpad, and there is an included device library for the MSP430FR5xx family itself.

See section 1.5 of the TI-RTOS 2.20 for MSP43x Getting Started Guide (SPRUHU4).

You should also know, TI-RTOS itself is no longer supported or maintained on MSP430, so its not really recommended for new designs.

My customer would like to use RTOS-based OS. Is there any other RTOS that supports MSP430FR5994?

Hi Kurumi,

There are some open source or community maintained options in addition to TI-RTOS.

OSRTOS maintains a list of available real-time operating systems by platform (including MSP430). You can find that here: https://www.osrtos.com/

I couldn't say which of these would have specific examples for the MSP430FR5x family, but FreeRTOS is probably the best maintained.
