JTAG compatability

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM3S8971, LM3S817

Hi,

I'm using luminary LM3S817 micro controller . Now i want to replace it with LM3S8971/8962.  can i use same JTAG for  LM3S8971/8962 and LM3S817. I have same pin configuration for both the controllers.

  • JTAG is JTAG - if correctly implemented upon both boards - operation should be, "near automatic."

We find it wise/useful to duplicate our JTAG header (mini (0.050" pitch, 10 pin, ARM style) across various MCU boards - enabling quick/eased JTAG/SWD probe insertion to each.

Suggest that you employ 4K7 - 10K pull up JTAG Rs - even though (and especially as) "internal, promised Rs w/in the MCU" are much higher resistance - and have not always proven especially robust.   Also wise to minimize and equalize connection lengths - between MCU JTAG pins & program/debug header.

More modern SWD (if your IDE allows) saves 2 MCU pins and is otherwise advantaged...
