TMS320F28027: Are the USB-UART and EEMPROM chips flashed with propietary content in Evaluation Board LAUNCHXL-F28027?

Hi,

I have integrated the TMS320F28F27 in one of our motor controllers. I would like now to create a small board for flashing and debug the microcontroller from CCS through the microUSB. Something like the upper part of the evaluation board LAUNCHXL-F28027, with a 2x5 pin connector to connect to the lines needed for it in the microcontroller board ( SCI_TX, JTAG_TRST, SCI_RX, GPIO_34, TDI, TMS, TDO, TCK, 3V3 and GND).

The task seems not difficult because the hardware desing package for the evaluation boar are available, but I have some doubts about the components:

-U6: the FT2232HQ, which is an USB HS DUAL UART/FIFO 64-QFN

-U8: the 93LC56BT-I/OT, a memory chip (EEPROM 2KBIT 3MHZ SOT23-6).

My doubt if they need to be programed with some TI propietary code /data or if I can buy them blank and use them directly. In case of the first case, is there any way of programming them ?

You can certainly include the components and circuitry on your custom board.

Yes, you will need to initially program the FT2232HQ device and EEPROM. The binary files is nothing proprietary. You can find details on the process in the previous E2E posts below.

Do you know if there is any equivalent and recommended component for FT2232HQ? There is an amazing scarcity of components stock these days.

Hi Rafael,

Yes, the component shortage is affecting many. The FT2232HL device is another option, but I don't know if you'll have better luck finding the part.

Another option I should have mentioned earlier is using a debug probe like TMDSEMU110-U or Blackhawk USB100v2 JTAG Emulator that already exists. You would need to include a JTAG connector on your board for these to connect to. See 'Emulator Connection' section in the f2802x datasheet for details on the connector specifics.
