TMS320F280025: Confirm If These Pins Are Correct for Debugging The Controller With either XDS110 or FT232RL

Part Number: TMS320F280025
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMDSEMU110-U

I want to confirm if these pins are the pins needed for debugging the controller with either XDS110 or FT232RL, as shown the schematic below.

Where, XDS110 needs TMS and TCK pins, maybe TDI and TDO pins from the controller. FT232RL needs SCI_RX and SCI_TX. And both of them need GND.

  • Hello Yun,

The XDS110 and FT232RL you are referring to are the embedded debug probes on our EVMs. Are you planning to include the debug probe components on your design? I assume you are not, therefore you really should be designing for an external debug probe such as the https://www.ti.com/tool/TMDSEMU110-U. For that you'll need either a 14-pin or 20-pin connector as shown in the device datasheet:

The SCI_RX and SCI_TX are not needed for JTAG debug.

  • Hi,

Thank you for answering. I meant to say the TMDSEMU110-U as for the XDS110. I thought XDS110 is the name of the external debug probe. And yes, the design does not include the debug probe component because we are trying to limiting down the board size.

I included SCI_RX and SCI_TX for FT232RL (FTDI USB to UART) because I am not sure which one to debug the controller yet. That's why I want to confirm if these pins are the one needed for the TMDSEMU110-U and FT232RL before sending to the fabrication.

Thank you again for your time, really appreciate the response.

    Yun

  • Yun,

For debugging with the TMDSEMU110-U and similar debug probes, you'll need the JTAG pins outlined in the datasheet. If you want to USB to UART communication you can add the FT232RL device, although that seems to be not recommended for new designs (NRND). FTDI does also have some USB to TTL cables (e.g. https://ftdichip.com/products/ttl-232r-3v3/) which maybe you want to consider if you don't want to add another IC to your board. Lastly, I'll point out that the TMDSEMU110-U also includes an auxiliary debug interface with UARTTX/RX port.
