TMS320F28334: chip recommendations

Part Number: TMS320F28334
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320F28379S, TMS320F28075

Hi Experts,

I am trying to help one of our customers. Their company is currently working on a new project and they are considering upgrading the current Digital Signal Processor (DSP) on our controller board for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) control.

Their current DSP is TMS320F2833. They want at least the specification of this chip, ideally better.

Here are the minimum specifications that DSP has to fulfill:
- 150 MHZ
- 256K x 16 flash, 34K x 16 SARAM
- 9 x ADC
- CANbus Tx Rx module
- 12 x EPWM
- External Memory Interface (EMIF) for communicating with FPGA
- SPI
- 12 x GPIO

The above is a must and they are looking for a possible upgrade to a more powerful DSP that can do the PMSM control. I have filter a list of devices but was not sure what is best to suggest. May I ask for your assistance on this so that our customer can proceed with their design accordingly? Thank you so much in advance.

Best regards,
Gerald

  • Gerald,

The most direct upgrade is the TMS320F28379S series. See the datasheet for different part number / configurations they can choose from.

One thing I would point out is that our newer parts provide significantly more performance per MHz due to flash technology and additional accelerators. In that case TMS320F28075 could also be considered.  This is similar to my first recommendation just running at reduced clock of 120 MHz.  This will perform better than their F28335 though.
