Hello Experts ,

I am reading through the TRM reference manual of the EPWM module.

Could you explain what are the real world applications of the PWM chopper module?

I know the TRM lists some use cases :

But could you please explain where would this be usefull in a motor driver application?

Is it supposed to be used as a 'soft starter' so that the first PWM pulse is controlled(chopped up, so that there is no sudden current drawn), especially in high power, very low inductance motors?

If you could point me to some reference documents, it would be helpfull.

The feedback here is that this is typically used in pulse transformer based application. The PWM o/p goes through a transformer output for isolation hence the high frequency chopped output helps in sizing the transformer.

Similarly, from this intro to EPWM video (https://www.ti.com/video/5775904537001): The PWM chopper submodule modulates a high frequency carrier signal with the PWM waveform that is generated by the action qualifier and dead band submodules. Its purpose is to control the power switching elements used with pulse transformer-based gate drivers. The high frequency carrier signal is logically ended with the EPWM outputs. And programmable options are available to support the magnetic properties and characteristics of the transformer and associated circuitry.
