TIDM-SOLARUINV: simulation of DC DC active clamp flyback converter

Part Number: TIDM-SOLARUINV

Hello,

I am checking this reference design of TIDM-SOLARUINV and trying to simulate a design for specification changes.

In this design, I am taking two considerations. The first one is using MOSFET,transformer, clamp capacitor all from TI reference design, I am using Totem pole instead of using the gate driver IC as it's simulation model is not available.

The second point I have simulated open-loop control of MOSFET in a flyback converter

I have also implemented a thermal analysis model for the  MOSFET's to get idea of junction temperature.

But I am checking that I get an efficiency of nearly 60% and the junction temperature is above 50 C than junction temperature.

For these two problems how can I improve the design so we can achieve efficiency between 95% to 99% and decreasing junction temperature?

Kindly advise me on improving system efficiency.

  • You have to find out where is your power losses. It could be in MOSFETs, transformers, inductors etc. Pls test and analyze those losses, why it is happening and then try to reduce those.

In any power electronic design this is very common part of the design. TI design was not very optimized for highest efficiency. It is only a reference design that show cases C2000 MCU capability with reasonable efficiency numbers. But it is not a Micro Inverter product since TI product is only the C2000 MCU and other analog/digital control ICs.

  • I am optimizing schematic the way use had suggested. Meanwhile can you please give me the calculation of selecting components like clamp capacitor, transformer primary inductance, and all others.

I have checked the controls power suit but there is not calculation available for this reference design.

  • We dont have these documented anywhere. Read any Active Flyback power converter design docs or papers available in public domain.
