DesignDRIVE Development Kit IDDK v2.2.1

In User's Guide, Page 7, TI recommends variable AC transformer (variac) and isolator.

Why variac and isolator is recommended?

Document says, it is recommended for our own safety.

What will happen if we are not using variac and direct raw power supply?

This is not clear in documentation.

  • Isolator is for protecting your test equipment such as scopes.

Variac is for having the chance to slowly increase the voltage after verifying basic functions and checking configurations. At low voltages, there is a possibility the damage may be avoided, though no guarantee to that. Alternately, one could use an isolated variable dc supply and start from low voltages and low current output limit settings.
