Evaluation board has I-TOTAL current measurement circuit. I searched motorware and controlSUITE source code and did not see that I-TOTAL signal value is used there. What is I-TOTAL for and where should it be used?

Right, there are no any example projects used this current since these projects used two/three phase currents for motor control in both controlSUITE and motorWare, but you could use it as an over-current protection by sampling the dc-bus current.
