TMS320F28031: Unexpected unlock failure when using C2000 GANG

Part Number: TMS320F28031
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: C2000-GANG

Hi team,

Here is a problem when my customer is trying to flash 4 chips with simultaneous with C2000 GANG.

1. All the 4 chips' power supply is from C2000 GANG, no external power.

2. When programing, there is a possibility that the targe VCC 'LED' in C2000 GANG GUI would turn to yellow while erasing the device.  And a error was reported.

3. Try to programe again, the device cannot be connected and the error MCU device INT FAILED or MCU unlock error were reported.

4. Monitoring the 3.3V, a voltage some drop to 3.26V~3.27V, and a error may occur.

5. If 3.3V is supplied by an external DC power, the fault does not occur.

Any suggestion on this issue?

  • Hi,

The current in C2000-GANG programmer is limited to 150 mA per target. It looks that your target including MCU is taking sometimes over 150 mA. From that reason you should supply the unit form external power supply, because the MCU is taking much more current during erase and programming.

  • Hi Gregory,

Looked through datasheet, the current consuming of F2806 and F28031 is quite close to 150mA,thus I am guessing when the drive capability of C2000-Gang is not enough, it may caused the locking issue.

Just want to make sure is it the original design consideration or let's say, recommeded to use external power supply?

    Regards,

    Brian

  • Hi Brian,

The C2000-GANG can  be used in many other C28xx and the current is much below 150mA. If the chip including other connected parts on the PCB takes close to 150mA, then the external power supply should be used. The data sheet is specify the average current, but instantaneous current can be higher and that can create the problem. In the C2000-GANG the max current can be 150 mA and the cut-off threshold is ~ 160 mA.

    Regrads,

    Gregory
