TMS320F28054M: InstaSpin Lab21 Initial Position Detection (IPD) and non-salient motor

Part Number: TMS320F28054M

Hi,

InstaSpin lab 21 uses Initial Position Detection (IPD) to find the initial rotor position of a PMSM, and then uses HFI to track the rotor position at low speeds.

The IPD description in lab 21 says "The IPD portion of the IPD_HFI module uses the BH curve of the iron that the stator coil is wrapped around to determine the north pole of the rotor and thus the d-axis".

It is not clear if IPD requires a "salient" motor.   The description says "the iron that the stator coil is wrapped around" is used to determine the north pole.   It is my understanding that saliency has to do with the positioning of the rotor magnets, not the iron of the stator.

Does the IPD portion of this lab work with non-salient motors?

Thanks.
