I am using TMS320f28377D controller, but I am observing controller gets reset suddenly, I have enabled Watchdog in my code. But I m not sure what is triggering the Watchdog to issue a reset?

I have developed the code in matlab-simulink environment and generated the code via Embedded Coder tool. I have thoroughly tested the code in matlab-simulink environment, there is no issue like divide by zero scenario or likewise. What could be the other sources other than application software which can trigger Watchdog to issue a reset?

Hi Jishnu,

If you have enabled Watchdog in your code then you need to service it at regular interval before Watchdog times out. Once you enable Watchdog, it start running and issue reset when it times out. There is no trigger needed for that.

Hi Vivek,

I will reframe my issue statement,

WatchDog is enabled and it gets serviced, after flashing my code in controller.

But then while using the controller, suddenly inbetween my controller gets reset. I am trying to find reason for this? why suddenly my watch dog is not being serviced which leads to reset.

Other than my application software issue, what are the other sources which can restrict WatchDog from being serviced.

Jishnu,

Are you sure that reset is caused by Watchdog only? We have NMIWD also which could trigger reset on some of the system error conditions. There is RESC status register which you can check to see what has caused the reset. If it's watchdog only then there could be some stack overflow which may cause SW not to run as expected hence causing the reset.

Ok thanks a lot for this information, I will check for RESC status register to have a clear idea whether it is WatchDog or NMIWD.

But for now lets assume for now it is Watchdog which is resets the controller, which indicates stack overflow, but isn't it suppose to cause this issue everytime I try to run my code. I mean there is no particular frequency or pattern, randomly reset happens. Stack overflow should happen repeatedly, if I run my controller under same conditions.

Yes Jishnu, I agree that stack overflow should happen every time if you are running with same conditions. Other issue which could generate random reset is unstable power supply. You may want to check that as well.

No, you need to scope the power supply for that but check the RESC register first.

Whenever there is reset,either NMIWD or Watchdog, that particular bit (NMIWDRSn or WDRSn) will be set, but is there any time limitation, after which that particular bit will be cleared?

Bit will not be cleared unless cleared by application SW.

Hello Vivek,

I ran some tests as per your suggestions and found it to be an issue with stack. Every time when there is a reset the stack pointer is beyond 0x800 and WDRSn bit is also set to 1. The Program counter points to Illegal ISR.

Any suggestion on how should I approach to resolve this stack overflow issue.

I don't use Embedded Coder, but maybe Control Stack Space Usage helps.

Finding out static stack usage might also help to determine the stack size required by the program, but not sure if the TI cg_xml tool can process the executables generated by the MATLAB Embedded Coder.

Yes. CCS 10 supports a hardware watchpoint which should allow the program to be halted when the stack pointer gets near the ending address, by setting the Location and Location Mask in the watchpoint properties.
