What does BLAC?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LAUNCHXL-F28027F, BOOSTXL-DRV8301, TMDSHVMTRINSPIN, LAUNCHXL-F28069M

Good Day!

On the DRV8301-69M KIT, it mentions something about BLDC/BLAC I would like to know what BLAC means exactly. Reason for this is I'm looking for a Micro-controller and KIT to FoC an Induction motor and would like to know if this can be used for that application.

Thank you in Advance!!

  • BLAC = Brush Less AC (Alternating Current)
This is a synchronous motor (not asynchronous induction) and the AC implies that the stator is wound to produce a sinusoidal (AC) Back EMF. This motor type is also known as a PMSM as the sinusoidal motors were historically always built using Permanent Magnets. Now, most non-PM magnetized iron brushless motors are actually sinusoidally wound also, but they still call them BLDC.

So BLDC has come to mean a synchronous motor that is controlled trapezoidally, and PMSM/BLAC has come to mean a motor that you would perform sinusoidal / FOC.

InstaSPIN-FOC can be used with induction motors, though the motor ID is not as straight forward and doesn't work for some motors (low voltage or high current). The kit you mentioned is only rated for 60A/40A and MOST induction motors are higher voltage. For those use TMDSHVMTRINSPIN for up to 10A. However, if you do have a low voltage induction motor (like our LVACIMTR) this kit could work, though typically the motor will not be so high current, so I would actually recommend a lower current inverter like DRV8312-69M-KIT or BOOSTXL-DRV8301 inverter with a Launchpad (LAUNCHXL-F28069M or LAUNCHXL-F28027F).
  • Thanks a lot! Do you have any links or references I can use about BLAC?
