TMS320F28377S: About Crystal Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) Requirements

Part Number: TMS320F28377S

Hi,

In the datasheet, 5.8.3.4 Crystal Oscillator, Table 5-16 Crystal Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) Requirements, It says about MAXIMUM ESR.

What happens if customer uses crystal that has larger ESR? my customer wants to use 60ohm or 80ohm crystal(the table says maximum is 45 ohm) and they wonder what will happen if they use it.

What will happen? is using higher ESR crystal is prohibited?

Best Regards,

Ted

  • Hi Ted,

If the ESR is higher than specified, on chip oscillator will not be able to drive the crystal, hence it may result in sluggish start up time or unwanted modes of operation. I will check with the experts around to confirm if we can support 60 ohm / 80 ohm ESR, but as far as I know it is prohibited.

    Regards,
