LAUNCHXL2-570LC43: Connectivity with the Hercules processor and WL18XXCOM82SDMMC (Wilink Wifi)

Part Number: LAUNCHXL2-570LC43
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: WL1837MOD, DM388, , WL18XXCOM82SDMMC, TMDX570LC43HDK

Hello,

I need at least a 60 Mbps transfer rate to send 2 camera HD video feeds over wifi and I am looking to see if this high powered Wifi chip can connect to the LaunchXL2- 570LC43 Hercules Chip. Is that possible, If not what are my other options!

Best,

Matt

  • Hi Matt,

Which Wifi chip are you looking to connect and what IP does it use to interface to the host device? keep in mind that the volume of data may also impact the ability to carry out the task since there is usually significant processing needed for movement of data within the device once it is captured from the input device. Also note that the device only has 512K of SRAM to use for buffering and packet manipulation purposes.
  • Hi ,

The WiFi chip we are connecting is the WL1837MOD and the IP from Hercules to the WiFi chip will be done through UART. We plan on using TCP protocol to send the WiFi signals out to devices such as to phones or routers. You are right we will most likely need the extra SRAM with HD video processing. What is the best way to connect the Hercules evaluation board to the WL1837MOD evaluation board?

Also, we are adding a DM388 to process the cameras and are unsure if the DM388 could accomplish all the tasks with off chip RAM or will we need the Hercules to facilitate the connection between the wifi chip, cameras and DM388?

  • Matt,

Does this application require Functional Safety or automotive temperature grades? Although, I am pleased that you are interested in Hercules, there may be devices at TI that are a better fit for what you are doing with it. Let me know if there are no safety requirements or automotive temperature grade and I can help direct to a more capable device for video processing. (NOTE that I am not saying that the hercules device can't do this, but there would be risk since it isn't optimized for that type of operation).

In regard to hookup between the Hercules board and the WL1837MOD EVM, It appears that the WL18XXCOM82SDMMC EVM is designed to plug directly into an SD card slot. If this is the case you could easily connect it to the TMDX570LC43HDK evaluation/development kit. As an alternative, you could move forward with the much less expensive LAUNCHXL2-570LC43 launchpad as noted originally by you and either use blue wire or a custom board connected to the booster pack connectors with an SD card on it.
  • Hi

It will need to meet automotive grade temperature requirements because it will be placed in a car dashboard in extremely hot environments. I ordered the TMDSCSK388-CSKCC-BNDL to handle the video processing. If you have other recommendations let me know. I essentially need the Hercules to take in sensor data and have the processed video sent through it to a cell chip to send it out to the cloud.

I do not believe the the DM388 (TMDSCSK388-CSKCC-BNDL) can handle the video and sensor to cell chip. Let me know if I am wrong.

    Matt

  • Matthew,

I don't have any experience with the DM388 or video processing so I can't offer much with regard to assurances that it will do what you want. I did see that the temperature range on it are -40 to 95C which is well below automotive temperature grade but, perhaps it is OK for in cabin applications which usually only require 85C at the upper end.
