MSP-EXP430FR6989: not detected by CCS v. 10.3.1

Part Number: MSP-EXP430FR6989
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430WARE, , MSP-EXP430FR2433

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am new to MSP430/Code Composer Studio. I installed Code Composer Studio v. 10.3.1 on my computer (Windows 10 pro, 64 bit), updating it when started first. With CCS running I selected "Browse and Import Examples" from the "Getting started" screem. This screen offered me an option of detecting my board. On attaching MSP-EXP430FR6989 (Rev. 1.0, according to the sticker on the underside), I got error message shown in the attached picture. Windows reports MSP Tools Driver to be active. I did a test with MSP-EXP430FR2433 (Rev. 1.0, according to info on the board).  This board got identified without problems. Following a visit on the MSP-EXP430FR6989 page, I installed MSP430Ware_3_80_13_03. Re-testing gave the same resuts.

Can I ask for some troubleshooting advice?

Yours,

Paweł Wierzba

  • Pawel,

Are you able to connect to the board if you use a manual connection instead of auto detect?  Just debug the project and see if an error is reported.  Also, check device manager and be sure there are no errors.  You could also try changing the COM port in device manager for the MSP Debug Device in case there is some conflict for the COM port.

  • Eddie,

thank you very much for your reply. The two COM ports are reported in the device manager as working properly.

use a manual connection instead of auto detect

I could try that, but please let me know where it is described. I searched some manuals without much luck. Information that CCS may detect board automatically, without telling what to do if it fails is not of much help.

Should I just select the board manually, import a project into CCS, build it and debug it? If so, how should I tell the CCS which COM port number it should use?

  • You could still try changing the COM port.  Sometimes there are conflicts that you may not see in device manager.

Import the project into CCS, right click the project and select properties.  Choose general and select MSP430 USB1 for connection.  Then, try to debug your project to see if it connects properly.

  • Thank you very much for your help.

I did as you advised: Imported a project into CCS, built it and started debug. At this point I got a measage that  eZ-FET needs a software update. Accepting the software update dialog resulted in quick update and the board started working like a charm.

There is another method that I tested with success. I made a cable connecting  the eZ-FET module from an MSP-EXP430FR2433 (which had been detected properly by CCS) to the "working part" of the MSP-EXP430FR6989.

Using the manual import method I also managed to "repair" a "non-working" eZ430-F2013 development tool.

There is, however, a rather sad conclusion regarding the documentation accompanying the LaunchPads.
The problems we have discussed happened during the setup process, where the user should be guided by something like
checklist or Quick Reference Handbook used in aviation: "If autodetect fails, do this ...". Instead one has to bother other people about trivial issues.

    Thank you again.
