MSP430F1232: MSP430F1232 brownout circuit

Part Number: MSP430F1232
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F2132

Hello,

we have a board using MSP430F1232, we used to have brownout protection in the power supply circuit, but we removed it in the new board. now MSP430F1232 stops working after recycle power. please check my below questions and advise, thanks a lot.

1. does MSP430F1232 have brownout circuit?

2. if MSP430F1232 doesn't have brownout circuit, is there a pin to pin compatible micro has brownout circuit that we can use to replace the MSP430F1232?

3. can we do something in firmware or hardware design to fix this MSP430F1232 brownout issue on our board, maybe we can change the resister/cap on the reset line to make it work reliably? thanks a lot.

below is our MSPF1232 reset pin schematic.

  • Hi Gu,

Sorry that I don't understand your requirement.

You use the F1232 to do the brownout protection in the power supply?

Is there are more details? I don't ssee how to protect in  this sch.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Johnson,

sorry for my poor description. I don't use the F1232 to do the brownout protection. the problem is our F1232 micro lockup issue after recycle power of our board, but other micro that has brownout circuit in it on the same board doesn't have any problem.

the F1232 reset circuit schematic is what I posted. after the F1232 lockup, we manually reset its reset line without recycle power, then F1232 start working. we suspect F1232 lockup because of brownout. my question is.

    1. does MSP430F1232 have brownout circuit?

    2. if MSP430F1232 doesn't have brownout circuit, is there a pin to pin compatible micro has brownout circuit that we can use to replace the MSP430F1232? maybe MSP430F2132?

    3. can we do something in firmware or hardware design to fix this MSP430F1232 brownout issue on our board, maybe we can change the resister/cap on the reset line to make it work reliably? thanks a lot.

  • Hi Gu,

I think maybe wee need to find the root cause of lockup for F1232.

What voltage for the F1232 supply power?

Maybe we can also to check where are locked for MCU, and maybe add the watch dog internal is a good choose, but find the root cause is the first priority, I don't this is cause by powerr down if your power is good.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Johnson,

your suggestion is good, we will do it, but can you answer my below question, we really need know whether the F1232 has a brownout circuit. the datasheet is not clear, would you please confirm it. thanks.

    1. does MSP430F1232 have brownout circuit?

  • Hi Gu,

We don't have brownout circuit can provide you as a reference.

And there are a SVS module inside in F1232, is means that you can setting a voltage via register, when the VCC browndown to this voltage, the CPU will be killed.

    Thanks!
