MSP430F248: MSP430F2418T

Part Number: MSP430F248

Hello I work for Honeywell just receive 19 IC pcs reporter as defective from customer Defect parts turn on then turn off after 5 minutes.

Part MSP430F2418T

1) 19 pcs tested and confirmed to be defective turn on and after 5 minutes the unit turn off.
2) Reviewed voltages before and after IC with PN: 50027048-001 are present, when unit turn off after 5 minutes, voltages before IC are present but from IC to Display are not present any more.
3) 3 pcs reviewed on Xray, if there’s is any solder ball or solder short and no issues found.
4) 3 pcs preformed reflowing the IC in order to verify if there is any cold solder and after reflowing still the same issue turn on and off so no cold solder found.
5) 3 pcs reprogramed in FFT to verify if program of IC was corrupted, and problem persist.
6) IC replaced and reprogramed and FFT pass, and problem is not present any more.

Please find below 2 of the 19 parts.

  • Hi Julian,

Defect parts turn on then turn off after 5 minutes.

This sounds like one of the clocks quits oscillating. Have you checked the erratsheet yet? For example, there are several in the BCL category that can cause the internal DCO to stop. There's also one related to one of the external clocks, XT2.

    2) Reviewed voltages before and after IC with PN: 50027048-001 are present, when unit turn off after 5 minutes, voltages before IC are present but from IC to Display are not present any more.

This condition could be caused if the device is stuck in reset. The IOs default to inputs at reset, so they wouldn't output any voltage.

    3) 3 pcs reviewed on Xray, if there’s is any solder ball or solder short and no issues found.

Is there any chance of ESD damage?

    5) 3 pcs reprogramed in FFT to verify if program of IC was corrupted, and problem persist.

    What does "FFT" mean?

    6) IC replaced and reprogramed and FFT pass, and problem is not present any more.

Some devices may exhibit an errata while others may not. If there's not a workaround implemented in software, reprogramming the device wouldn't help that.
