MSP430F5438: Migrating From MSP430F5438A to MSP430F5438

Part Number: MSP430F5438

Dear team,

The customer want to migrating from  MSP430F5438A  to  MSP430F5438 because of (MSP430F5438A) out of stock.

They read the https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slaa419c/slaa419c.pdf and they have several questions.

1 The PMMCOREVx value of MSP430F5438 is only 0 or 2, and cannot be the value of 0,1,2,3

2  How to modify the value of PMMCOREVx in the boot code, and which file to modify?

3 In customer's application, the ADC reference voltage uses the external pin input power supply without using the internal reference voltage, which should have no effect on the AD sampling program. Which peripherals might these reference voltages be used for? Does it has an impact?

4 What is the difference of UCS?

Please help to check these questions.

  • Hello Susan,

    1. That is correct. There is more functionality in the "A" version of the part.

    2. Boot code is not modifiable.

    3. The "non-A" version of the chip doe snot have a reference module. The available internal reference is part of the ADC. Both the internal and external references are only used for the ADC of this part.

4.Please see the UCS chapter of the User Guide as indicated for these differences. They are called out in Notes within that chapter.

Please be aware this is not recommended to go from "A" version to the "non-A" version. If you still wish to do so, please keep in mind the max frequency, differences vcore vs frequency vs voltage, and the significant errata differences between the parts. You may need to completely re-architect your program in order to take into account the the errata that are present on the "non-A" devices versus the "A" variant.
