MSP-EXP430G2: programming MSP430G2252 Bare Die

Part Number: MSP-EXP430G2

Hello,

I have a G2 LP that had an MSP430G2553 installed. I have no issues programming the onboard 2553 with both CCS (latest version) and energia. However, when I remove the onboard mcu and connect a bare die MSP430G2252 (four wires connecting power, ground, TEST, and RESET) neither CCS nor energia recognizes the board. My understanding is that the 2252 is very similar to the 2452 that is supported by the LP. The error I keep getting is "Could not find device or device is not supported."

Thanks,

AQ

  • Hello,

By "bare die", I assume you mean just a package. Are you using the new G2ET LaunchPad or older G2 LaunchPad? Take a look at Table 1 in the MSP Debuggers User's Guide. The older G2 LaunchPad only supports a subset of devices whereas the newer debuggers support all MSP430 devices over SBW.

Also, please refer to the MSP430 Hardware Tools User's Guide and the device-specific datasheet to learn more about the required connections and passives. Without following these guidelines, I would expect some issues to occur.

  • Yes, bare die packaging.

    LaunchPad is MSP-EXP430G2 (Rev 1.5)

    This LP supports MSP430G2452.

    Thanks,

    AQ

  • Yes, bare die packaging.

Typically, "bare die" means the bare die without any packaging. I assume you're using device package that isn't populated on a board.

    This LP supports MSP430G2452.

Table 1 in the MSP Debuggers User's Guide does not indicate that the G2452 is supported by the MSP-EXP430G2.

  • I am using the device without any packaging (bare die).

I am referring to the MSP-EXP430G2 user guide for support information.

    Sorry for any misunderstandings.

I stand corrected! Thanks for the link and clarification. I haven't seen many bare die devices used in the wild.

Interesting. The G2 user's guide seems to imply that the G2452 is supported by the G2's debugger (why else would the device be included in the kit). If that's the case, we need to update the MSP Debuggers User's Guide. Let me look into that.

Even though it's a bare die, you'll probably want to use a decoupling cap on VCC and use the recommended JTAG circuitry for programming. Can you double-check the pad connections are correct? Perhaps there's a connection that isn't contacting the pad correctly (I'm sure they are quite small). Also, make sure the jumper wires are as short as possible.
