MSP-EXP430FR2311: firmware update failed

Part Number: MSP-EXP430FR2311
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-FET, MSP430F5528

We recently ordered two TI LaunchPad kits with MSP430 MCU. I connected the device to my computer and verified the supplied demo was running as expected. Then I created a new sample project in code composer studio using the basic blink the LED template and started a debug session. I followed the instructions to update the firmware. The firmware update process failed. Now every time I attempt to start a debug session I get the following error message:

MSP430: Error initializing emulator: One of the connected MSP-FETs / eZ-FETs debuggers needs recovery. Select 'Recover' to start the recovery process.  Note: Only one MSP-FET / eZ-FET debugger can be connected to your system during recovery.MSP430: Error: MSP-FET / eZ-FET recovery failed

I repeated the process on the other device in case the first was just defective out of the box and it did the same thing.

Please advise me on what procedure I should follow to successfully perform a recovery.
