MSP430F5529: BSL process

Hi Champ,

I am asking for my customer. They are working on update process issue, and I get confused with their process.

The process is Switch to Flash BSL(0x1000) → Write RAM BSL to RAM(0x2500) → Switch to RAM BSL(0x2500) → Program App into Flash(0x4400) → Switch to App(0x4400).

Flash BSL：BSL_00.08.88.39.txt (Use MSP430Flasher.exe to read from the chip, and then compare)

RAM BSL：RAM_BSL_00.07.08.38.txt

The update process does not support the function of restoring the FW after the update process is powered off, and both the Flash BSL and the RAM BSL are official images.

In general, most of the customers implement the update process that the RAM BSL will be omitted, and the APP will be updated directly through the Flash BSL.

May I consult the purpose for doing the way like this which has any special consideration ? Or is it recommended from any our doc. ?

Hi Johnny,

In normal circumstances the Flash BSL can update the device with new program code without the need for the RAM BSL. The RAM BSL is designed to update the onboard flash BSL. Obviously, if the customer wants to update the BSL you cannot do that while the BSL is active. In other words, the BSL cannot update itself. So by loading a different BSL into RAM you are able to update the flash BSL while running the RAM BSL. I hope that makes sense.

Section 2.5 of the Flash Devices Bootloader User Guide has some additional information about the RAM (loadable) BSL.

Johnny,

I spoke with my team about USB BSL. They were able to add some more context.

Since the full USB BSL is large it cannot always fix onto the device so the process for USB BSL is to have a minimal BSL on flash. When BSL is invoked, a fully-featured BSL is loaded into RAM to complete the rest of the BSL operation.
