MSP-GANG: GANG can't write to MSP430

Part Number: MSP-GANG
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430G2412, MSP-TS430PW28A, , MSP-FET

We are a TI distributor and our client got 5 MSP-GANGs in this April.

But 2 of 5 GANGs were malfunctioned.

The 2 GANGs can't write into flash memories and IR Communication Error occured in every writing. Other 3 GANGs can write without error.

Testing target is MSP430G2412 on MSP-TS430PW28A.  Providing 3.28V(Measured) external power supply and setting GANG IP is "External -  in range +/-0.3V" and "3.3V".

I don't know why I can write the flash with setting voltage "3.0V".  But I found IR communication error in any other voltage settings.

TI will repair this malfunctioned MSG-GANGs or exchange to new one?

Best regards.

  • Hi,

Frequently the cause is a bad connection between the MSP-GANG Programmer and the target device. A 14-wire ribbon cable is provided for JTAG/SBW or BSL connection between MSP-GANG and target device. The ribbon cable has an impedance of approximately 100 Ω and has DC lines in the ribbon cable to provide good isolation between signal wires (TDI, TCK, TMS, TDO). Each signal wire is separated by a DC wire to minimize crosstalk between the signal wires.

Can you try to change the cable for test?

  • Thanks to reply Allen Gao.

I try to change 10 another cables, but the mulfunction is depend on MSP-GANG, and not depend on the cables.

    I think MSP-GANGs have problem.

  • Hi Massa,

Do you try other device to program? and other protocol like BSL, SBW, JTAG?

Try to update the firmware of MSP-GANG. If it still no work, apply for after-sales.

  • Thanks to reply Gao.

I already try to write other devices with SBW and JTAG, and I found the trouble is depend on the power supply.

It's okay to write flash using GANG power.  But connecting external power supply and return the voltage to JTAG Vcc TARGET pin, the mulfunction is issued.

Of cause, MSP-GANG firmware is newest version.

I'll start to apply for TI Japan with your message.

Thanks a lot and best regards.

  • Hi

You need to follow this caution. Could you show your connection?

  • Hi Massa1,

(Note For all of below, you can add images to your post by using Insert > image/video/file from the toolbar at the bottom of the editor when you are posting.)

    1. In addition to showing your connections, can you comment on the jumper positions on the MSP-TS430PW28A? There are jumpers that configure JTAG vs SBW and Vcc internal vs external. You could take a photo of the board and connection to MSP-GANG to show the setup, that might be the easiest way to share.

    2. Can you provide screenshots of the MSP-GANG GUI showing all of the settings you use?

    3. Can you run the self-test on the MSP-GANG and share the results report? You can do this from the MSP-GANG GUI by selecting Tools > Self Test. You will want to run this without any target board connected.

    Regards,

    Katie

  • Hi Gao,

    I'm using many MSP430s, MSP-FET, MSP-GANG for 20 years.

I joined every TIDC in Dallas and Houston.

Of cause I always teach many users to keep these cautions.

    No problem.

  • Hi Pier,

We are using SBW and connecting external Vcc then supply 3.28V, and setting as external power.

Then we connect JP1 as external power.

Remember we can write the flash the device on TS430PW28A with MSP-FET and three good MSP-GANG.

Only two GANGs issued as Fail.

    Captured screen-shot here.

  • Hi Pier,

I'll send the results of self-test.  The results are too long, but we can find just one Error.  Another tests are OK.

  • Hi Pier,

Another MSP-GANG shows two Errors as:

Both MSP-GANG failed on test No. 32.

But I can't understand what I will treat following Errors.

    Best Regards,

    Massa.

  • Thanks for running the self-test Massa! I am going to work with our MSP-GANG developer to get more information on the self-test errors you see, but normally there should be no error when self-test is run. So this is already useful info that something is wrong. I'll reach back out very soon.

    Regards,

    Katie
