    Larissa,

    no 5.1M resistor is required for LFXT1 operation in LF mode. Typically this is only needed on older-generation devices (1xx family) under specific operating conditions (VCC<2.5V). Please also consult the "MSP430 32-kHz Crystal Oscillators" application report (http://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/slaa322), there is a lot of valuable info as it relates to setting up a robust crystal oscillator.
