MSP430FG439: How to measure ECG and heart rate using electrode

Part Number: MSP430FG439
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1292, AFE4960

Hello TI experts,

my customer is looking for the IC that can measure ECG and heart rate using electrode.

there are several ICs that can measure ECG using electrode, but I cannot find IC which can measure heart rate using electrode.

could you recommend the IC which my customer is looking for?

(they saw SLAA280B, "Heart-Rate and EKG Monitor Using the MSP430FG439" and MOD-EKG. I also want to know that it is the best way to implement these 2 functions.)

Best regards,

Chase

  • Hi Chase,

Anything which can measure ECG can also determine the heart rate based on the period of the ECG waveform. They could look at that MSP430FG439 design, or something like TIDA-1580, (although this has PPG as well, which they may or may not use).

The best implementation depends on what level of performance they want. Higher end clinical ECG applications will typically use integrated AFEs and usually have 12-leads. Something like an ECG patch or wearable ECG monitor may have only a single-lead ECG implementation.

if you haven't already, you can also take a look at our Biosensing AFEs Product Page, which has devices for every level of ECG quality and number of leads. This likely includes some of the devices you have already seen.

  • Dear Brandon,

    Thank you for your support.

I checked several datasheets, most of AFE line-ups support optical HRM, not electrode.

could you check the ICs which can measure heart rate using electrode?

    Best regards,

    Chase

  • Hi Chase,

I will transfer your question to our team that supports our biosensing products. They should be able to provide the best recommendation.

  • Hi Chase,

We have a variety of ECG AFEs for your customer. Could they answer these questions:

    • What form factor will their project be? Is this bedside ECG, or closer to a Holter or patch ECG?
    • How many leads are needed for their system?
    • Is respiration rate needed?
    • Is pacemaker detection needed?
    • Is blood oxygen saturation needed?

With these answered we could best help them choose an IC that fits their needs.

    Kind regards,
    Nick Z

  • Dear Nick,

    Thank you for your support.

    • What form factor will their project be? Is this bedside ECG, or closer to a Holter or patch ECG? -> it is close to holter, they want to measure it by contacting 2 fingers to electrode.
    • How many leads are needed for their system? -> i think only 2 leads needed. (left hand's finger and right hand's finger.)
    • Is respiration rate needed? -> No.
    • Is pacemaker detection needed? -> No.
    • Is blood oxygen saturation needed? -> No.

The point is that they need the measurement using electrode, not using optical module.

    Best regards,

    Chase

  • Hi Chase,

Our PPG 44xx measures heartrate using optical PPG. ADS119x and ADS129x measures using electrode. AFE49xx can generally use both optical PPG and electrode.

In the case of two inputs with no extra features, the ADS1292 (https://www.ti.com/product/ADS1292) would likely be their best bet. Alternatively, the AFE4960 (https://www.ti.com/product/AFE4960) is also capable of two ECG inputs.

    Kind regards,
    Nick Z
