MSP430G2553: MSP EXP430G2 launchpad error writing device memory 0xFFDE

Part Number: MSP430G2553

This launchpad used to work with same device.

Recently, attempt to debug even an LED blinking example on MSP430G2553 throws this error. writing device memory at 0xFFDE. PWR LED is ONas green

To Verify and Rectify the possible launchpad malfunction:

  1. How to test voltage or current insufficiency to flash, say on emulator - target jumper pins or other points in the launch pad
  2. Expected voltage/current value
  • Hi,

I would like to understand the issue you are having.

    • Are you seeing this error when you try to program to the launchpad?
    • How are you connecting to the launchpad? USB or through a MSP FET or other emulation device?
    • What example are you using? Have you modified it at all?
    • Can you confirm your jumpers are configured correctly?
    • Are you using CCS?

    Regards,

    Evan

  • You should have the jumpers in the green box

  • Hi Evan,

Many thanks for the kind and prompt support. Point wise replies below:

    • Using CCS v6.1.1 on Win8
    • Create new CCS project, select MSP430G2553
    • Opt for demo LED example
    • Build All
    • Launchpad "MSP-EXP430G2" connected and detected on Mini USB cable
    • Launch Debug (that throws one ULP advice dialog box and then shows download progress bars)
    • Finally it throws error dialog box "error writing device memory at 0xFFDE" and defers debug session
    • All five jumpers populated on emulator/target interface (pointed by 6-pin eZ430 Connector in pic below)

PS: same launchpad and controller used to work previously on same laptop in 2010-11

  • Hi Lucky,

0xFFDE should be the BSLKEY on these devices, so it shouldn;t be getting written during normal JTAG programming. Is it possible for you to try this with a newer version of CCS, or are you trying to support a legacy system here?

I just want to be sure that the launchpad itself is still working after all of this time.

    Best Regards,
    Brandon Fisher
