MSP-EXP430FR5969: Unable to run from USB - asks me to update firmware

Hi,

When I first started using the MSP-EXP430FR5969 eval kit, I used the USB interface and everything worked fine.

I then started using the JTAG interface and that worked as well.

I want to go back to the USB interface and when I do that I get errors. It seems to recognize the correct USB port but then it wants me to update the firmware

Error initializing emulator:
A firmware update is required for the MSP430 Debug Interface (MSP-FET430UIF / MSP-FET / eZ-FET). Click the "Update" button to update the firmware and launch your debug session (this may require several update steps).

DO NOT UNPLUG THE INTERFACE DURING THE UPDATE.

I press update and wait and see the LEDs toggle on the board but then the message I show above reappears....

Can you please help me with this?

Hi,

What CCS version you are using with? And can you check if you click ignore, can the programmer still work without update the firmware?

The version is 12.4.0.00007 and when I click ignore, I get:

Error initializing emulator: Could not set device VCC

I do notice when I connect the USB connector one of the RED LEDs are on (the one near the emulation MCU)

Make sure that the VCC voltage is near 3.3VDC and make sure nothing is drawing too much current from said VCC. This error usually happens when you load the voltage regulator too much and causes the 3.3V rail to drop below a threshold which prevents the MCU from working.

Ok. When I measure the VCC and I see it below 3.3V. I took off the jumper on J13-15 and 16 and then I see a green light and now I measure the correct voltage. So is something loading down the other side of the interface?

When I us the JTAG header instead, I do not see this. Don't they both drive this voltage? Could it be my USB connection?

No it only works from JTAG

Hi，

Do you have other MSP-EXP430FR5969 eval kit boards? I want to do a cross check whether it is the ez-FET issue or the MCU issue.

I can get another one. It might take a while to get it.

I was able to externally power up the 3.3V (V+) side and everything worked (removed V+ jumper). It drew about .1A

So maybe the voltage converter is bad?
