oscillator for MSP-TS430RSB40 board

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-TS430RSB40

Hi all,

I want to use MSP-TS430RSB40 board (with MSP430F51x1) with a 25 MHz crystal oscillator. Do I need to use a speacial type oscillator or Can I use any oscillator that produces 25 MHz signal? I appreaciate if anyone helps.

  • If you mean a crystal oscillator (a 3 or 4 pin device that sends a square signal of a given frequency), then every oscillator is fine as long as its output signal is high enough (so it is detected as high input) and not too high (not above the MSPs VCC).
If you mean a plain 25MHz quartz crystal (two pin), then not every type is equally good. It depends on your layout and such. Best is a baseband crystal, but these are scarce above 20MHz. And you'll need the proper load capacitors attached. If you don't get a baseband crystal and your layout isn't perfect, chances are that it will oscillate with 12 or 8MHz instead.
