Is there a TI tool or via IAR that I can set a password on the BSL?  I don't want to write my own BootStrap loader.

I don't know of a tool to set the password.  I believe it can be defined in the linker.cmd, but let me check on this.

According the MSP430 FLASH BSL user guide, section 2.4.4.3, the last 32 bytes of FLASH memory (0xFFE0 - 0xFFFF) are used as the PW.  The PW is essentially the interrupt vector assignments and reset vector at 0xFFFE.

You can generate a .txt image and view the values.

I managed to interface with the MSP430F1612 via uniflash and the MSP-FET-430UIF.  According to the uniflash user guide there should be a set password feature.  But one does not appear.  Any idea why?  Is it due to the micro not allowing that option?  Is the only option for the MSP430F1612 a fuse burn?

My apologies for the delay in my response.

The PW is stored in 0xFFE0 - 0xFFFE.  This happens to also be the region where interrupt vectors are stored. 0xFFFF is the Reset vector.

You can see this in my .txt output file that was generated by the linker.

You see without any interrupt vectors, a vector to a trap (rts430_eabi.lib : isr_trap.asm.obj (.text:_isr:__TI_ISR_TRAP)) is inserted.  This way if you configure a peripheral, such as a timer but forget to include the ISR, when the timer interrupt occurs it will jump safely to the trap.

Anyway, when you declare a function as an interrupt ISR, the vector to that function is included in this area.  Those interrupt vectors that are not used, you can place you own values.  It is then the combination of the ISR vectors and your populated values that make up the PW.
