MSP430FR60431: Understanding Maximum Measurable Velocity and TOF Resolution in MSP430FR60431

Part Number: MSP430FR60431

Tool/software:

Hi,

In the MSP430FR60431 datasheet, it mentions the ability to measure a maximum flow rate of 8800 liters/hour (40 gallons/minute) on a 25-mm diameter pipe.

I calculated that this corresponds roughly to a velocity of 4.9 m/s (using DN25 and 8800 LPH). I have a few questions regarding this limitation:

  • Does this maximum flow rate imply that the MSP430FR60431 cannot accurately measure velocities higher than ~4.9 m/s in this pipe size?

  • Is this limitation related to the TOF (Time of Flight) measurement time resolution in the MCU?

  • What are the common workarounds or design considerations to extend the measurable velocity or flow rate range beyond this limit?

I’d appreciate any insights on the nature of this limitation and how best to address it in a flow measurement application.

  • Hi,

I am not sure how to get the maximum flow rate of 8800LPH. I suppose it could relate to limit of ADC capture size.

From my view, I think the USS solution can accurately measure a higher velocity than 4.9m/s as long as you can capture a good receive signal.

  • Hi

    Thank you for your explanation

My question is related to the datasheet, where it mentions the ability to measure a maximum flow rate of 8800 liters/hour (40 gallons/minute) on a 25-mm diameter pipe. Could you please clarify what exactly this means?
Is this the maximum flow rate validated through testing, or is it a theoretical limit based on the USS system’s capabilities?

Also, I noticed in the Ultrasonic Sensing Design Center that the gap between the pulse start and ADC capture can only be set to 26 microseconds. Is this a hardware or software limitation? Could this be affecting my ability to measure higher flow rates accurately?

    Looking forward to your clarification.

  • Hi,

I do not know where the 8800LPH is getting from. I can not help you on this point.

For the 2nd point, it is a hardware limitation since it controls by the ASQ timer in auto measurement mode. If you use in register mode, then this limitation can be ignored. Please refer to the ASQ chapter in UG for more information.

  • HI,

    Please refer this image.DatasheetLink

  • Hi,

I know you get it from the datasheet. But I do not know how it is calculated.
