MSP430F2003 SD_16 module operation

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F2003

Hi all,

Anybody got any idea of what happens if you operate the MSP430F2003 SD 16 bit ADC below the recommended minimum 2.5V? How does this affect the performance of the module?

Thanks

  • The internal reference as well as the OpAmps require some 'headroom' above the signal level and the reference voltage level.
If it is too little, distortion will appear for the larger signals, current consumption will rise, conversion linearity will be affected, gain errors may arise, and many other nasty effects can appear.

  • Dear Jens,

Thank you for your time and reply. However, I had in mind some of the effects that you mentioned. What I would like to know (and this also goes to any TI design support engineer that is following this thread) is if I could use the module down to 2V  without seriously affecting its performance. Is there a definite answer to this question with hard facts?

Thanks in advance to anyone that cares to reply.

The definite answer with hard facts is the one given in the datasheet:

Outside the limits specified in the datasheet, the behaviour is undefined.

  • Thanks for the reply Neil but sorry, Undefined is just not good enough for an analogue module.

Leaving the specified parameters isn't good for any application.

TI won't give any specs for operating outside the operating range. If you want to do it anyway, you're on your own. It hasn't to do with 'good enough', it has to do with abusing things for something they aren't made for. It may work or not, may break temporarily or permanently, what will happen is simply undefined as the device wasn't made for this.

If you want an answer that will define the worst-case specs for the asked operating conditions, then I can give you the authoritative answer: worst case, it won't work at all. You can trust that it won't be worse, but perhaps better.
