MSP430F5438A: MSP-GANG SD INIT 46 Error

Part Number: MSP430F5438A

We had a 64GB SD card with a *.hex file, and *.mspgangbin and *.mspgangimage files generated from the *.hex file. We learned that the MSP-GANG tool has a size limit of 8GB.

After transferring the contents to an 8GB SD card, formatted with FAT 32, we are getting a "SD INIT 46" error code, or "ERROR # 046 - SD Card - Initialization Error" from the user manual.

Is this strictly an SD card error - and if so, what could cause the error - or could there be a problem with the images on the card that would cause this?

We have tried other SD cards with similar images and they are not generating an error.

Thank you.

  • Hi Mason,

When using an SD to store the image, only the .mspgangbin should be in the root the SD card. If there are multiple binaries, only the first found will be selected (this may not be alphabetical).

Can you confirm the correct binary is being selected?

Additionally, have you attempted an identical image on the other SD cards?

    Best Regards,
    Brian

  • There's no rhyme or reason, but the issue was with the SD card itself.

We have some Cactus 8GB cards that work normally for other purposes, but no matter how we formatted it or put a single binary on it, could not get the gang programmer to accept the SD card.

In the past, we've had success with Onn and Sandisk cards - even with all three binaries on the card.

We ended up getting some Kexin 8GB cards on Amazon that worked just fine - even with all three binaries on the card.

    Shrug
