MSP430G2153 DCO versus VLO

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430G2153

I am looking to use the MSP430G2153 and run a UART port at 115k baud. I prefer not to use an external crystal/clock and was wondering whether there are any stability issues with using the internal DCO or VLO to run the UART at 115k baud rate?

Would there be a big difference between DCO or VLO in terms of stability in general?

  • David,

You probably won't have much luck with the VLO as it has a pretty wide frequency range spec (4KHz to 20KHz) and is also pretty slow compared to the 115Kbuad you are looking for.  That said, the DCO should work fine.  There is some variation based on temp and voltage, but worst case is +/-6% over full temp and Vcc range, with typical values being <1% at a constant voltage (Reference the Calibrated DCO Frequencies Tolerance page in the MSP430G2153 datasheet for more info).
