Programming MSP430F5257 via Jtag MSP430FET 430UIF Debugger

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F5257, MSP-TS430RGC64C

Hello,

I am using MSP430F5257 IC which i recently ordered from TI. I have prepared the circuit on a PCB. I have used a four wire JTAG connections.

Whenever i try programming my IC i get error saying "Unable to Connect to target, Unknown device". Can someone help me with the circuit. i have used the exact value of the components in the circuit diagram. Does this IC require some kind of bootloader?

  • No it doesn't need that.
Does your micro have power? Look at the top left of the schematic. Which pin of the 14-pin JTAG connector have you connected to the micro's Vcc? Pin 2 or pin 4? If you power the micro from any kind of voltage source on your board, then connect pin 4 to Vcc. If powered by the FET, then connect pin 2.
  • Hello Dennis,

    Thank you for replying quickly.

I checked the the connections and they are according to what you have mentioned. The IC is being powered through FET. Is there any other way through which we can program the IC. I am unable to find any error in the connections or is there anything more we need to do to make the JTAG work?

  • Varun:

You may want to also look at the MSP-TS430RGC64C board in SLAU278 - that is the TI board recommended for evaluation purposes - is there something additional on that board that you need to incorporate?

    Hopefully, that may help...

  • Hi Todd,

I had made a few mistakes, while  most of the boards typically use RST/NMI pin for programming via JTAG the MSP430f5x and 6x series use RSTDVCC/SBWTDIO pin for programming. That was one of the error and also i beleive that they cannot be programmed through 4-Wire Jtag, we finally were able to program using Spy-Bi-Wire Interface( 2-Wire Jtag).

Thank you Dennis and Todd for your help.

All MSP430x5xx and MSP430x6xx devices with JTAG ID 91 (MSP430F5257) support both 4-wire JTAG and Spy-Bi-Wire.
