MSP430F2616 - Are 2 Crystal Oscillators required, 1 at XIN/XOUT & 1 at XT2IN/XT2OUT?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F2616

I cannot find any info concerning the requirement for 2 oscillators. Previous experience has always required one. Any thoughts, suggestions appreciated.

  • Hi Stan,
the clock system of the MSP430F2616 can be configured to operate without any external components, with one external resistor, with one or two external crystals, or with resonators. So you can choose if your application needs the performance of an accurate clock or if you prefer the ultra-low power operation of an internal oscillator.

The information you're looking for is located in chapter 5 of the users guide.

    Best regards,
    Tobias

  • It depends on your application. Do you need accuracy? Do you need a watch crystal frequency and a higher frequency input? The part is designed for flexibility. You need to analyze your system requirements and decide if internal only timebase is good enough or if you need one or more external timebase references.
