Need help with USB-driver installation for launchpad

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F135, MSP-EXP430FR5969, MSP430FR5969, MSP430G2553

Hello,

I worked with several controllers before, now I want to start a project with TI - MSP430F135.

Somebody told me, that almost each launchpad can be used as programmer.

So I got a launchpad MSP-EXP430FR5969.

I downloaded the latest CC, installed it into a VM under XP SP3. I can create simple projects with CC and can compile them.

But when I connect the launchpad via USB to the VM, driver installation tool pop up, but installation ends with a message that some parts of the INF-file are not valid.

I downloaded several other similar driver packages for USB_FET or USB-EZ, all with similar result.

Any ideas that can help?

  • Hi,

Just to verify, did you setup CCS properly to install the MSP430 packages?

    Sincerely,
    Sean
  • Where can I check CCS ?
  • I think I have make my questions more concrete:

    - Does actual CCS contain all drivers necessary to connect to launchpads, especially my MSP-EXP430FR5969?
Or do I have to install special drivers?

    - are there any problems known with XP / SP3 and drivers?

    - are there any problems known with drivers and VM / VB?

  • Hi,

The link will give you the latest version of CCS processors.wiki.ti.com/.../Download_CCS

During installation of CCS, please make sure to install the packages for MSP430 devices, as this will enable launchpads to be connected and programmed through CCS. XP/SP3 is supported, however, I'm not sure about driver installation under a VM environment; but it shouldn't be a problem.

You should also reference the MSP430FR5969 Launchpad development kit guide at the following link.

  • Hello,
    I tried some other configuration.
First I installed CCS without VM.
When I connectd my MSP-EXP430FR5969, CCS told me that an firmware update was necessary and send some files to the MSP-EXP430FR5969. Unfortunately the update was unsuccesully and CCS tried to recover the firmware (with success).
Since then, the Launchpad refuses to work with CCS.

In the meantime I got another launchpad, an MSP-EXP430G2, populated with an MSP430G2553.
I connected the launchpad, and I was able to download and to debug a small sample program with out problems.
So I tried again the CCS I installed in a VM before, it connected also without problems, but runs very slowly.
The MSP-EXP430G2 connects al "Texas Instrumens MSP-FET430UIF" and works proprly, while the MSP-EXP430FR5969 connects as "MSP TOOLS DRIVER" and doesnt run.
  • Hi,

It sounds like the FR5969 launchpad may have been bricked after the firmware update, you can refer to this thread to reset the device. As for the additional delay, I suppose it's because of the VM, is the use of a VM required for your project?

  • Hello, thank you for your response.

fortunately I got my new launchpad MSP-EXP430G2, so I'm not limited to my bricked one.
Unfortunately I found, that the MSP-EXP430G2 has only spy-by-wire, but no JTAG. So I assume, that I cannot use the
MSP-EXP430G2 to connect to my final target MWP430F135, as I found that this controller requires JTAG or BSL,
    but not Spy-by-wire?
