MSP430F5521 Linux/ Apple USB Virtual COM port drivers

The whole point of having a standardized device class, such as CDC, is to allow operating systems to use these devices automatically without having to install anything.

Just because Windows (before version 10) does not support this does not mean that Linux or OS X would be equally stupid.

Forgive my ignorance but I am not sure how to process the reply. I should have started by saying that I'm not completely knowledgeable of drivers and how they work, especially in Linux. The Windows driver I've downloaded from TI website. All I am trying to do is connect via USB /Serial to my device using Apple or a Linux machine. How do I do that? Please lower your reply to a beginner's level :) Thank you very much.

To use a CDC device in Linux, OS X, or Windows 10, just plug it in.

Thank you Clemens! I did plug it into a Raspberry Pi and checked/dev and looked for a tty device associated with the USB but could not find one. Also checked the dmesg to see if anything was logged when plugging the device and there was nothing. The device works properly when plugged in Windows, though. Am I missing something basic?

And you are quite right! It works in Debian but not in Raspbian :) I wonder why.

Compile your own kernel with the CDC driver enabled. Or just use a distribution that already did this for you.

Thank you, since I'm not a software guy but rather hardware I have limited experience compiling anything than FPGA's so any pointer to where I could sudo apt-get the required files would be helpful.

Or maybe the autoloading is broken. Does "sudo modprobe cdc-acm" or "sudo insmod cdc-acm" work?

No it does not appear to work - especially the second command it says it can't find the module/directory

Then Raspbian indeed decided not to include this driver. If you cannot compile your own kernel, ask on the Raspbian forum, or get another distribution.
