MSP430 programming using BSL interface and MSP Flasher

We developing a new product for which we are using MSP430FR5847 microcontroller. For the prototype of this project we used JTAG for programming.

But the current version of our product is intended for a wide field trial. So it is essential that we provide a provision to update the firmware by the user.

For that purpose we are looking into the BSL of the microcontroller. To interface the UART of the PC we are planning to use the Universal Bootloader Interface (Reference SLAU319) and at the PC the MSP Flasher software.

The intended setup is as shown in the figure

Is this a correct approach to provide the user with the programmability at the field.

I think you need to re-consider using that Universal Bootloader Interface (Reference SLAU319).

Looking at the picture in your post, where can your user find a PC look like that? Do you expect the PC to accommodate DB-9 connection to UART?

Review the BOM, can you get those components?

The PC picture shown is just for illustration. I got it off MS word clipart.
Universal Bootloader Interface converts the DB9 voltages to 3V range so that it can be interfaced with the uart of msp430 uc.
As you said there can be a problem of finding a serial port in a new PC.

Actually, that picture is showing the correct kind of PC the Universal Bootloader Interface (Reference SLAU319) is designed for. The problem is they are both difficult to find and support.

You should consider using a USB to 3.3V UART converter chip instead of that ancient design.
