Am not able to program my msp430g2153

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430G2153, MSP430G2513, MSP-FET

I tried to program msp430g2153 using a launchpad using test, rst, vcc and ground using ccs. But the software couldn't identify my target. Any idea to program msp430g2153

  • The MSP-EXP430G2 LaunchPad supports MSP430G2513 devices. Make sure your device is oriented into the DIP socket correctly. Are you able to use the exact same LaunchPad jumper configuration to program other devices, like the G2553? Have you changed your device variant inside of the CCS General Properties? Please provide a screenshot of the error message inside of CCS.

  • Hi Ryan,
Thanks for your reply. the problem is, my board is not loaded with with BSL, hence it is not able to communicate with my device. But when i try to change my launchpad as a BSL loader with the new program which is posted in the community website. My emulator IC is not recognized. Do we need BSL in an IC to get programmed using test, rst. Kindly suggest me the right programmer to buy to program my board. Actually i got a readymade board. where they gave me rest, test, bsl rx and tx ,vcc and ground. rest all pins are engaged. And i think it doesn't have BSL loaded inside my IC. Hope so you can suggest me a right method to program my board.

    Thanks

  • Hi Ananthalakshmi,

You do not need the BSL to program a MSP430 device using the JTAG SBW connections (RST/TEST). If you are using a LaunchPad then you should be able to program the device using the on-board ez430, assuming the VCC/GND/RST/TEST jumpers are populated correctly. If programming a MSP430 on a custom board then you will need to sky-wire these ez430 jumper pins to the board or use a MSP-FET. Please refer to the MSP430 Hardware Tools User's Guide (SLAU278) for proper JTAG connections: www.ti.com/.../slau278y.pdf

  • Hi Ryan,
Still i am not able to program my msp430g2153 board. CCS says Device could not find / target device is not supported. I have used 4 pins vcc, ground, test, rst. Can i assume that my launchpad emulator does not support this IC as it is explained in the following link. e2e.ti.com/.../346074
Then tried to upgrade my launchpad firmware with firmwareupgrade2.0 version. I got an error some thing went wrong. Application need to be closed.
Any valuable suggestion please. Its very urgent.
    regards

  • Anathalakshmi,

The link you provide is over five years old, I've already stated that the eZ430 emulator supports all MSP430G2xx2, MSP430G2xx3, and MSP430F20xx devices. Does your custom msp430G2153 board have a 47 kOhm pull-up resistor and 2.2 nF capacitor to GND on the RST line? Are the jumper lines from the eZ430 to the custom PCB as short as possible? Can you prove that your Vcc pins are properly supplied? Perform a continuity test to check for proper connections as well as detect any possible shorts. If desired you can supply your board schematics and layout images.  What program are you using for the firmware upgrade?

  • Hi Ryan,

I have did all the possibilities you suggest to me.And also i am more sure that my IC is getting power. Still I am not able to program msp430. Any other possible procedures. Or tell me the possible bugs why am i not able to program my boards and how to rectify it.

    regards

    Ananthalakshmi.N

  • Hi Ananthalakshmi.N,

There are no bugs associated with SBW and the MSP430G2153. If you've proven that the eZ430 can program an on-LaunchPad MSP430G2 device then there is something wrong with the board you are trying to connect to and program. It is hard for me to tell what is wrong with your hardware without seeing it in person. Can you upload a picture of your setup?

    Regards,
    Ryan
  • Hi Ryan,

When i check the vcc voltage level for msp430g2153 ,It shows 3.5v, Even i give 3.3v from launchpad. Is there any thing to be corrected for voltage levels.

    regards

    Ananthalakshmi.

  • A voltage level difference could cause the SBW communication failure. What power supply are you using for your custom board, the MSP-EXP430G2 LaunchPad or something else? An image of your setup would once again be helpful.

  • Hello Ryan,

I got my board programmed. The resistor and capacitor value with the rst made a problem. Now every thing is fine Thanks for your support.

    Thanks
