MSP430F1121A: Newly bought Parts unrecognized by MSP-FETU430IF/Elprotonic flashprogrammer

Part Number: MSP430F1121A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-TS430DW28, MSP-FET

I have recently bought some MSP430F1121A from mouser and they are not recognized by the setup,

I tested it against some old parts on some prototypes that was recognized by the software as MSP430F1121A

Is that a problem you have experienced before or is it a bad lot that I have got?

I look forward hearing from you

Best regards,

Ulf Nielsen

  • So the same MSP-FET430UIF tool and FET-Pro430 software could recognize the MSP430F1121A devices from a previous prototype? What are the IC marking on the old devices as compared to the new ones? And what specific error message are you receiving? Are there any changes to the JTAG/SBW communication lines on the new PC board designs, either in the schematic or layout? A hardware change is possibly causing miscommunication between the FET and target device.

    Ryan
  • Hi Ryan
Actually I tested them on an old PCB so that I was sure that it wasn't the layout causing the problem
I will have to look again on the parts to find the old and new codes on the parts
the error message is just unregonized parts,
Do you want a pic of the old and the new parts?
    Best regards
    Ulf Nielsen
  • Hi Ulf,

A picture of the old/new parts would be appreciated. The layout can still be an issue with different device revisions, do you have a MSP-TS430DW28 you could test with?

    Regards,
    Ryan
  • i Ryan

No I don't have a MSP-TS430DW28 that I can test it with but I can see it would be way easier to use that tool

    Regards,

    Ulf

  • Hi Ryan,

Here are some pics that shows the MSP430F1121A MCU's and the gui from the elprotonic programmer

I look forward hearing from you

    All best

  • Hi Ulf,

Thanks for providing these. Every device is Rev J so the issue is not revision-related. Are you using JTAG SBW for programming? Can you provide the board schematic? JTAG communication connections should follow the Hardware Tools User's Guide (SLAU278) instructions: www.ti.com/.../slau278y.pdf

    Regards,
    Ryan
  • MSP430F1121A_Schematic.pdfHi Ryan,

Yes I follow the JTAG communication connections.

here the schematic, which works fine with the first model (MSP430F1121A)

    Best regards,

    Ulf

  • Remove R401, untie JTAG pins 2 and 4 (use pin 2 for FET supply or pin 4 for separate power supply), add a 10 uF capacitor to the VCC trace, and populate the RST line with a 47 kOhm pull-up resistor and 1 nF pull-down capacitor to see if this fixes the issue. Toggle between SBW or 4-wire JTAG inside of FET-Pro430 to see if this makes any difference.

    Regards,
    Ryan
  • Hi Ryan,

I have the VCC trace is connected to a 2000uF polymer cap but I added a 10uF ceramic cap over the MCU
I implemented the other suggestiens as well
No differences still same response from the elprotonic GUI :(

    Do you have more suggestions?

I look forward hearing from you

    All best

    Ulf

  • Hi Ulf,

Have you tried updating your FET-Pro430 version or used a different IDE like CCS? What about using a MSP-FET or a different computer? Have the devices ever been programmed before or are the blank? You are able to verify flash memory so communication appears to be working, can you read the flash memory or perform any other commands?

    Regards,
    Ryan
  • Hi Ryan

I've mounted one of the previous MSP on the board and I could read it, programme it, erase it.

The MSP FET is updated to the latest firmware, I've rolled the firmware back to a previous version without any change, the old MSP could be read, programmed, erased the newer ones not.

I haven't tried it with another IDE only the elprotonic programmer GUI, that has been working very well for the last 10 years or so..

In other words all the verification of the memory, the programming, the reading doesn't work on the newest parts I've got but fine on the previous ones I got.

So I don't know what I'm missing to test, besides the CCS IDE, that I don't have any experience with yet.

    Best regards

    Ulf

  • I appreciate the chip swap test and have no doubt that your older devices work with the boards, however the JTAG pins of the newer devices do not seem to respond as well with the hardware design. At this point I would like to know if they can be programmed with the MSP-TS430DW28 developed by TI, you will need to get one or send me a few of the devices in question for testing.

    Regards,
    Ryan
  • Hi Ryan,

    No problem.

I guess it's easier for you to test the devices, first I don't have the test/programming board that you mention, second I think you have a much better way of testing them

So where to can I ship them or how do we do that?

    Best regards,

    Ulf

  • I'm reaching out to you via e-mail.

    Regards,
    Ryan
