CCS/MSP430G2855: MSP430G2855 doesn't work

Part Number: MSP430G2855
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-EXP430G2, , MSP430G2553, MSP-EXP430F5529LP, MSP-EXP430FR5969, MSP-FET

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Hello,

I've bought a MSP430G2855 microcontroller and I will program it with the launch pad (MSP-EXP430G2) and Code Composer Studio (V 7.2.0). But when I compile and run the program, Code Composer shows the error message:

"Error connecting to the target: Could not find device (or device not supported)"

Under "project --> properties" the correct controller is selected. I have connected the pins DVCC, DVSS, AVCC, AVSS, TEST and RESET between the mc and the launch pad and the slot of the launch pad ist empty.

Is it even possible to program this microcontroller with the launch pad "MSP-EXP430G2"? On the ti-webseite of the microcontroller, this launch pad is listed under "tools & software", but in the manual of the launch pad the controller MSP430G2855 isn't listed under "supported devices". The othere comtrollers (for example "MSP430G2553") works fine with this configuration.

Where is my mistake?

Cheers
Marcel

  • Hello Marcel,

Thank you for your detailed post. Unfortunately, the on-board debugger on the MSP-EXP430G2 does not support the MSP430G2855. If you ever have a question about which MSP430 debugger supports which devices, you can find this information in Table 1 in our MSP Debuggers User's Guide.

If you have another LaunchPad (such as a MSP-EXP430F5529LP or MSP-EXP430FR5969) with an eZ-FET or eZ-FET Lite debugger, you should be able to program your MSP430G2855. Our MSP-FET debugger supports all MSP430 devices and is the one I use the most.

    Hopefully this helps!

    Regards,

    James

  • As a follow-up, you can also find out the exact devices supported by the MSP-EXP430G2's debugger by looking at Section 4.7 in the MSP-EXP430G2 LaunchPad Evaluation Kit User's Guide.

  • Hi James,

    thank you very much!

The table above helps a lot. When I understand it right, the MSP430G2855 is suported only by the debuggers shown in the five columns on the right side of the table. So I think/hope, the MSP-FET is the best solution for me.

    Thanks again an best regards
    Marcel
  • Hello Marcel,

It's a very easy mistake to make, especially since we offer so many MSP430 devices. You are correct - the debuggers in the five columns on the right will support the MSP430G2855. The MSP-FET is the best choice, since it supports all MSP430 devices, supports both 2-wire (SBW) and 4-wire JTAG, supports BSL mode, supported across various operating systems (Windows, Mac, Linux), and also supports a back-channel UART communication channel.
