EVM430-I2040S: Programming IC on this kit

Part Number: EVM430-I2040S
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-EXP430FR5994, MSP430I2040, MSP430I2041, MSP-EXP430FR2311, MSP-FET

Hi,
I am using EVM430-I2040S for my load monitoring project. I wanted to know certain things about this evaluation kit.

Since the kit is ESD and I would be connecting and removing power sources regularly, what type of connectors and enclosures can I use for this kit?

The software given in the CD with this kit updates readings every 80ms. But the sampling rate of the IC on the board is much higher. I want to store the voltage and current readings on a microsd card using the SPI interface available on EVM but I am unable to figure out how to program the IC on this evaluation kit.

Thanking you,

Yours sincerely,

Abhishek Grover.

  • Hello Abhishek,

I'm not sure what you mean by "the kit is ESD". If you're wanting to connect a SD card to the EVM430-I2040S, do not remove and reinsert the SD card while the EVM430-I2040S is connected to High Voltage (HV). This would be very dangerous, and you could be shocked. If you're powering everything down and removing the HV connections and then removing the SD card, this would be fine. However, it may be better to connect the UART TX/RX signals of the MSP430I2040 through the isolated DB9 connector on the EVM430-I2040S to a host MCU like our MSP-EXP430FR5994, which features an on-board SD card slot.

For the enclosure, I'd recommend a clear, strong, thick, non-conducting material. Also, I'd strongly recommend that the enclosure can be locked by a padlock. The connectors are going to depend on the RMS voltage and RMS currents that you'll be measuring. I'd recommend looking on Digi-Key for these connectors.

  • Hi,
How can I program IC on this evaluation kit?

    Abhishek.
  • Hello,

Programming instructions can be found in Appendix A.2 in the Single Phase and DC Embedded Metering (Power Monitor) Using MSP430I2040 app note.

  • Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Can we program this without using MSP-FET430UIF?
Is there any method by which I can program this using Raspberry pi or any other method ?

    Best Regards,
    Abhishek Grover.
  • Hello Abhishek,

I would suggest using the newer MSP-FET debugger. An alternative would be using the on-board eZ-FET or eZ-FET Lite debugger on a LaunchPad (e.g. MSP‑EXP430FR5969, MSP-EXP430FR2311) to program the MSP430I2041 through its two-wire SBW interface.

Since the MSP430I2041 does not have a bootloader, unfortunately this method cannot be used for programming the device. If it did and you were using a BeagleBone Black based on a Sitara AM335x processor running Linux, you could refer to the following resource.
