CCS/MSP430F5529: Cannot connect to target using external power supply

I am using the MSP430F5529 launchpad to program an MSP430G2221 on an external board.

It has been smooth until I tried to program the MSP430G2221 using its own power supply. It consists of a 25V switching supply which is connected to a parasitic supply. Then it goes to an LDO and finally to the MSP430G2221. Both grounds, the one on the launchpad and the one of the MSP430G2221, are connected.

I have measure the voltage between grounds and it is 0V, as expected. The voltage between the 3V3 output of the launchpad and the LDO output is -190mV. I am not sure if this voltage difference is enough to make the communication fail.

Hi,

Is the LaunchPad being powered via USB? And what is the measured voltage at the input to the MSP430G2221?

Also, could you please clarify exactly what failure you are seeing?

Sorry for being vague. The issue is that Code Composer Studio wont detect the MSP430g2221 for programming.

the VCC voltage measured on the MSP430F2221 is 3.6V.

Hi,

Could you please describe the hardware connections that you are using? Besides disconnecting the VCC pin on the MSP430G2221 from the LaunchPad and connecting it to the external power supply, did you make any other changes to the connections?

Hi,

I detected the issue. The voltage on the micro controller was 3.61V and the voltage on the launchpad was 3.4 volts, there was a problem with the grounds and the LDO on the board was a bit off. The PCB has the MSP430g2221 which was powered by an LDO which converted 25V into 3.3 (supposedly).
