RTOS/MSP430F5242: Recommended Evaluation Platform

Hi Team,

My customer is planning to use the MSP430F5242. There does not seem to be an eval board for it, and the one linked on the page is for a 64-pin package. Is there a recommended MSP for evaluation that has the easiest project migration to the MSP430F5242? They already have the MSP-EXP430F5529LP - how simple would it be to migrate from this device? I assume it would be straight-forward since they're both F5 series but want to confirm it is the best path.

    Hello Antonio,

    While the target socket board may be for the 64-pin package, both packages are still the same MSP430F5242 device. Thus, my recommendation would be to purchase the MSP-FET and the MSP-TS430RGC64C target board for their development. The target board may not work with BoosterPacks, but it's still an excellent development platform that the customer can use to easily program, connect to other modules via jumper wires, blink LEDs, etc. The migration effort between F5529 to F5242 shouldn't be difficult, but this would save them from doing any migration.

    Have you promoted the FRAM devices to them yet? We offer the MSP430FR5xx series, which features the MSP-EXP430FR5969 LaunchPad. If the MSP430FR5xx or FR6xx device, they can find more information about the differences in the Migrating from the MSP430F5xx and MSP430F6xx Family to the MSP430FR58xx/FR59xx/68xx/69xx Family user's guide.

    Hi James,

    I only see the MSP430F5242 in a 48-pin package. Are you suggesting they use the MSP430F5249 (64-pin)?

    We have also discussed FRAM, but the F5 series was a better fit for this particular application.

    it looks like MSP430F5242 is not supported on MSP-TS430 boards.

    According to Table 1-1 in the MSP430 Hardware Tools User's Guide, the MSP430F524x devices are supported by our MSP-TS430RGC64C target board. Now,  you are absolutely correct that the MSP430F5242 isn't offered in the 64-pin package, so this specific device can't be used with the MSP-TS430RGC64C target board. I'll see if we can update Table 1-1 accordingly.

    Now, back to Antonio's question. With these things in mind, I would recommend ordering the 64-pin MSP430F5249IRGCR and using with the MSP-TS430RGC64C target board. The F5249 is basically the F5242 with more memory in a different package. Then, the migration from the F5249 on the target board to the F5242 on their prototype boards would be very easy.
