MSP430F2012: Sensing high voltage on DIO pin

Part Number: MSP430F2012

Good afternoon....

Does the MSP430F2012 have ESD protection on the DIO pins?....I was hoping to use a 10k series resistor between a pin and an 8V switch to detect when the switch was thrown...The MSP will be powered off of 3.3V so I figured the pin could most likely be driven to 3.6V before the internal diode kicks on.....A 10k seems to be reasonable as it would limit the current to (8-3.6)/10k or 4.4mA....

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Steve

  • The absolute maximum ratings say "any pin" because all pins have ESD protection diodes.

It would be possible to limit the current with a resistor, but if the 0.44 µA are not actually consumed by some device, the 3.3 V supply will float up. Better use a voltage divider.
