CCS/MSP430FR5739-EP: MSP-EXP430FR5739

Part Number: MSP430FR5739-EP
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2500, SIMPLICITI, MSP-EXP430FR5739, CC1101, CC1120, MSP-EXP430FR2355

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

I am trying to implement P2P SimpliciTI on MSP-EXP430FR5739 with CC2500 radios. I was previously told to change smpl_nwk_config.dat and smpl_config.dat in project files as they refer to some other board. I imported a project  from SimpliciTI (CCS-1-1-1-5xx) and updated these files in the Project with the ones from right branch\path as indicated in the instructions (\SimpliciTI_CCS_1_1_1_5xx\Projects\Examples\EXP430FR5739\Simple_Peer_to_Peer\CCS\Configuration\files.dat). I also changed the addresses for both the boards (Listener/talker) but aint working.

Now that I have updated these files and I debug the code in the MSP-EXP430 boards; the simpliciTI doesn't run as I cant see the blinking pattern as documented. If I run the code in Debug mode it is stuck in the initialization of the radio transceiver. Is there anything else that I need to do?

  • Hello Sikandar,

There is an app note available which uses the MSP-EXP430FR5739 and CC1101 radio. The CC1101 and CC2500 are pin for pin compatible and control registers are compatible, so this should help to get you to the right configuration.

Here is another design using MSP-EXP430FR5739 and CC1120 radio that could be useful.

  • Hello Eddie,

Thanks for your reply. I really appreciate.

I went through the document that you suggested and I did perform all those procedures but SimpliciTI doesn't seem to be working as I dont see any blinking of the LEDs as documented.

Upon running it in the debug mode; I observed that it gets stuck in the radio initialization function where the random number generation ftn is called. It is always stuck there.

Any further help/suggestion is looked forward to.

    Reg,

    Sik

  • We haven't done new development on SimpliciTI for some years and the resources that worked with this product have moved on hence supporting this is a bit difficult.

Did you look at www.ti.com/.../TIDC-CHN since this design is using the same MCU as you want to use?

What is the background for selecting CC2500 + SimpliciTI? Would you be able to fulfill the project requirements using newer products?
  • Hello TER,
I am intrigued by your suggestion of newer products.
I was thinking of starting a project involving MSP-EXP430FR2355 + CC2500 + SimpliciTI. Do you have any suggestion for a better alternative? Following are my requirements.
    1. The MCU should have a DAC peripheral.
    2. I need an independent I2C channel.
    3. Radio should be 2.4 GHz (for small pcb-mount chip antenna).
    4. Low power feature (hence MSP430).

If you think MSP-EXP430FR2355 + CC2500 + SimpliciTI is a right choice, can you please guide me on how to port SimpliciTI to this project from the example of say EZ430-RF2500? Thanks!
  • Hi Sikandar,

We have involved simple link team for suggestion on recommended latest parts/stack for you.

    regards
    KC
